One person was killed and another seriously injured on Sunday following a head-on collision on U.S. 50 near Gunnison, according to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol. The crash took place at about 2:20 p.m. near milepost 155, a few miles west of Gunnison, when an eastbound Chevrolet Silverado veered into the westbound lane, hitting a Jeep Wrangler with a small camper trailer, officials said. The impact caused both vehicles to spin out, with the Jeep rolling at least once before catching fire, the release stated. The driver of the Silverado, a 61-year-old man from Morrison, was pronounced dead as he was being airlifted to a hospital. The driver of the Wrangler, a 28-year-old man from Leadville, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The name of the deceased motorist is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, the State Patrol said.
