NIA arrests bank employee in counterfeit currency recovery case in UP

New Delhi, Sep 8 (PTI) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested Amit Kumar, a bank employee and a key accused in the conspiracy relating to counterfeit currency notes at the Punjab National Bank currency chest in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur, officials said on Tuesday. Kumar, a currency chest manager at the bank, had been on the run since the registration of the case. On August 26, 2026, Sadar Bazar police station in Saharanpur district received information regarding the recovery of counterfeit Indian currency notes with a face value of Rs 17.29 crore from the currency chest of Punjab National Bank in Saharanpur, a statement issued by the NIA said. The involvement of three bank employees, including Kumar, surfaced during the inquiry, following which they were suspended, it said. The other two employees are senior divisional manager Ravi Kumar Kase and currency chest manager Sushil Sharma. The case, initially registered by the Uttar Pradesh Police, was taken over by the NIA on September 3. 'Investigation is ongoing to unfold the complete conspiracy and to arrest the co-accused persons," it added.
