Artificial Trailer: What happens when one of the biggest names in artificial intelligence suddenly loses his own company, only to get his job back days later? That real-life Silicon Valley drama is now heading to the big screen with Artificial, Luca Guadagnino's upcoming film about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and the explosive events that shook the company in 2023. Andrew Garfield has taken the role of Sam Altman. Neon has released the first trailer for the movie which gives audiences a look at Andrew Garfield as Altman as the AI race intensifies and tensions inside OpenAI reach a breaking point. What Is Artificial About? Written by Saturday Night Live alum Simon Rich, Artificial follows the rapid rise of machine learning before turning its attention to the dramatic events surrounding OpenAI in November 2023. Altman was unexpectedly removed as CEO after a conflict within the company. OpenAI co-founder and then-chief scientist Ilya Sutskever was among those involved in the decision. But Altman's exit did not last long. After intense developments inside and outside the company, he returned as CEO just five days later. The movie uses that extraordinary episode as its central storyline while also looking at the wider race to develop increasingly powerful artificial intelligence. Who Plays Sam Altman In Artificial? Andrew Garfield takes on the role of Sam Altman, the OpenAI co-founder and CEO during one of the most turbulent periods of his career. Yura Borisov plays Ilya Sutskever, while Monica Barbaro portrays former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati. The cast also includes Cooper Hoffman as Greg Brockman, another OpenAI co-founder, and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk. Adding even more star power to the film, Mark Rylance plays AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton. Jason Schwartzman, Zosia Mamet, Chris O'Dowd, Cooper Koch and Billie Lourd are also part of the cast. Who Directed Artificial? Artificial is directed by Luca Guadagnino, the filmmaker behind movies including Call Me by Your Name, Challengers and Queer. The screenplay comes from Simon Rich, who also wrote An American Pickle. Guadagnino and Rich are among the film's producers, alongside David Heyman, Jeffrey Clifford and Jennifer Fox. Why Did Amazon MGM Drop Artificial? The film's journey to theatres has been unusually complicated. Amazon MGM was initially planning to release Artificial worldwide but dropped the project earlier this year. The decision attracted attention because Amazon had also entered into a major partnership with OpenAI and invested $50 billion in the company. At the time, Amazon MGM Studios said the movie would 'be better served if it were released by a different studio.' After Amazon MGM stepped away, Netflix, A24 and Focus Features also passed on the project before Neon eventually acquired distribution rights in June 2026. When Will Artificial Be Released? Before its theatrical release, Artificial will have its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival on October 5 at Alice Tully Hall. The film will then open in select theatres on December 25, giving it a Christmas Day theatrical launch. Its release will expand across more locations in January.
