Congress Leaders Criticize Delhi Government Over Satya Niketan Incident

New Delhi, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : Congress leader Abhishek Dutt has raised serious questions about the Delhi government's response to the recent Satya Niketan incident. He accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta of succumbing to pressure from building mafias. Dutt called for action against the Commissioner and other officials under Section 56J. He stated, 'There is immense pressure on the BJP government from building mafias to prevent strict action against officials. Merely suspending them is not enough. These officials will return to their posts in two months. All corrupt officials, including the Commissioner, should be dismissed under Section 56J. Just yesterday, members of their party were misleading the public by demanding the Commissioner's removal.' Dutt urged the government to immediately terminate the Commissioner's position to ensure that no official is influenced by politicians or builders, preventing such tragic incidents in the future. He recalled that when Congress was in power in 1984, a significant law was enacted in 1985 under Section 466A. This law allowed for criminal charges against individuals involved in illegal construction in Delhi. He criticized the current government's recent introduction of the Jan Vishwas Bill, which he claims removes Section 466A, thereby shielding builders from criminal prosecution. 'If the government had exerted the same effort to protect Delhi's buildings, such accidents would not occur,' he added. According to government data, only 19 buildings in Delhi are currently classified as dangerous. Dutt argued that officials are under pressure from builders and politicians to avoid identifying these hazardous structures. He called for a door-to-door survey in Delhi to list all dangerous buildings on the municipal corporation's website. This would allow potential renters to check the safety of these properties. Furthermore, he proposed cutting off electricity and water connections to buildings deemed dangerous until they are repaired. 'No one should be allowed to live in these buildings until our technical surveyor gives the green light,' he insisted. Dutt also highlighted issues beyond hostel safety, noting that students have expressed concerns about inadequate transportation options in Delhi. He mentioned that students often find it challenging to commute, with the Delhi Metro being too expensive.
