With just one more game left on the calendar for the opening weekend of the college football season, Miami quarterback Darian Mensah has turned in the best performance in the country. On Friday night at Stanford, Mensah completed 27-of-30 passes for 401 yards with five touchdowns. The passing grade from Pro Football Focus checks in at a 93.0, which is the highest grade of all the quarterbacks in the country.Let's take a closer look at Mensah's performance by diving into some of the advanced numbers…The metrics that stand out the most about Mensah's performance is the explosiveness numbers. Mensah averaged 13.3 yards per attempt against a Power Four opponent and completed 4-of-6 deep shot attempts (balls that travel at least 20 yards downfield through the air).Over the past two seasons, Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson has worked with two talented transfer quarterbacks in Cam Ward and Carson Beck. Ward went on to become the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft while Beck was a third round selection after leading UM to a National Championship appearance. The most explosive performance—in terms of yards per attempt—from Beck's 2025 season at Miami came against South Florida, averaging 12.1 yards per attempt as he totaled 340 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Beck's top yards per attempt performance against a Power Four opponent was against NC State, throwing for 291 yards with three touchdowns while averaging 10.8 yards per attempt.Ward's most explosive performance in 2024 came against Ball State, throwing for 346 yards and five touchdowns while averaging 12.4 yards per attempt. His most explosive performance against a Power Four opponent came against Florida in the season opener, throwing for 385 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in the swamp. The efficiency that Mensah displayed while being explosive is what made the performance against Stanford elite. In Beck's performance against NC State, he completed 78 percent of his passes and had an average time to throw of 2.65 seconds. In Ward's performance at Florida, he completed 74.3 percent of his attempts with an average time to throw of 3.12 seconds. In a very small sample size of just one game, Mensah showed signs of being more efficient as a processor than Beck and more explosive as a passer than Ward. Mensah completed 90 percent of his attempts on Friday night with an average time to throw of 2.29 seconds.Amongst Power Four quarterbacks, those four completed deep balls is tied for the most in the country along with Trinidad Chambliss of Ole Miss, Mason Heintschel of Pittsburgh, Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele of California, DJ Lagway of Baylor. This marriage of Mensah and Miami is also helping the quarterback be more explosive compared to his time at Duke.In 2025, Mensah's most explosive performance against a Power Four opponent came against Illinois, completing 23-of-34 passes for 334 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while averaging 9.8 yards per attempt.
The previous high for completion percentage in Mensah's college career was in 2024 while at Tulane against FCS program Southeast Louisiana, completing 83.3 percent of his attempts. The previous fastest trigger that Mensah has shown in a game was in 2025 against California with an average time to throw of 2.46 seconds.Mensah turned in the most explosive performance by a UM quarterback in the most recent seasons in his first start with the Hurricanes. And he was highly efficient too.Defenses will adjust and look to make Mensah uncomfortable during the course of the 2026 season, but it is clear a special season is in store.
