Nashik Rural police arrest two in theft case

Nashik: The Ozar Police in Nashik Rural have arrested two suspects who, while posing as sadhus, duped a local trader in broad daylight and fled with his gold jewellery. Acting on the complaint, the team traced the duo to the banks of the Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh and recovered melted gold blocks worth Rs2.8 lakh. The incident took place on Aug 22 in Ozar. The complainant, a 45-year-old sweets-shop owner, was approached by the two men in the afternoon. They first gained his trust and then took his gold rings valued at around Rs1 lakh before fleeing. As per the complainant, the impostors who arrived at his shop on a motorcycle initially demanded a big donation for a religious feast in Trimbakeshwar. Though the complainant initially told them that he could not pay the donation, one of the accused placed a cone-shaped item on the former's palm as prasad and after chanting some mantra, pretended to transform it into a rudraksha. One of the suspects, after asking the shopkeeper to stretch out his hands, removed two gold rings from his hand, put them in his mouth and left. Realising that he was cheated, the shopkeeper registered a complaint with Ozar police station. Inpector Mahesh Kulkarni of Ozar police station said the breakthrough came through rigorous technical analysis and meticulous review of footage from over 45 CCTV cameras along the escape route of the suspects. The trail led the team to Khalghat, along Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh, where the officers arrested the duo from a crowded area. The accused have been identified as Jalimnath Kalunath (25) and Bandhannath Madhunath (26), both residents of Kasrawad in MP's Khargone district. The duo were produced in court and have been remanded in two-day police custody.
