What's next for Orioles' Ryan Helsley amid elbow injury recovery?

Baltimore Orioles reliever Ryan Helsley gets a big update in his injury recovery with in final stretch of the season. The Baltimore Orioles have been without Ryan Helsley for nearly the entire season, as he's been dealing with inflammation in his right elbow since late June. However, it appears he could return soon enough to potentially help Baltimore in its final push for the playoffs. In his latest update, the 32-year-old reliever is scheduled for a live batting practice on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to MLB.com. He participated in his fifth bullpen session a few days prior and is seemingly ramping up to possibly return in the closing weeks of September. '[Ryan Helsley] threw his fifth bullpen session on Sept. 4 at Camden Yards. Scheduled for live batting practice on Sept. 8 or 9,' the report said. Article Continues Below After initially being placed on the 15-day IL on July 3, retroactive to June 30, the Orioles eventually transitioned the eight-year veteran to the 60-day IL on July 19. Helsley only appeared in 17 games before sustaining the injury. In just 15.1 innings pitched this season, he owns a 4.11 ERA and 1.435 WHIP with 21 strikeouts and eight saves. With Ryan Helsley missing a majority of this season due to recovering from his injury, the Orioles have had to go with a makeshift approach in the bullpen. Yennier Cano and Andrew Kittredge have played the closer role throughout the campaign in Helsley's absence. His role in the bullpen in not entirely clear if he does return to action before the end of the regular season. While the two-time All-Star continues his recovery process, the Orioles have business to attend to. Baltimore will take on the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday for the second contest of a three-game series. The team will then move on and face off against the Toronto Blue Jays in another three-game series.
