The UN has endorsed the Equal Earth projection on to display the true relative sizes of the world's continents. The Mercator map distorts the size of land masses, making Greenland similar in size to Africa when it is much smaller. Blue is the old projection, red the new and more accurate one. On September 4, the United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly endorsed a resolution to promote the Equal Earth projection over the traditional Mercator map to better reflect the true scale of continents.
