A collaboration with Women in Sport and United Striders Athletics Club will welcome women to their free event, Discover Athletics, on Wednesday, September 2, where they can explore a range of activities.
The event is designed to show that athletics is about much more than running and racing, with participants getting the opportunity to try a range of events in a relaxed and beginner-friendly environment.
Activities will include running, hurdles, jumping and throwing, with participants encouraged to try events they may never have experienced before. 'There is no requirement to be fit, fast or experienced, and the emphasis is firmly on having a go, having fun and discovering what athletics has to offer,' said Brendan Lyng, Chairperson of USAC.
'One of the highlights will be a fun, modified heptathlon, inspired by Team Ireland's Kate O'Connor and her recent gold medal-winning performance at the European Championships. Participants will get the chance to experience a selection of the events that make up the heptathlon in an informal and accessible format,' he added. The evening will also include an outdoor Pilates session, followed by refreshments, giving participants an opportunity to relax and socialise after the activities.
Catherine Redmond, Women in Sport Officer with United Striders Athletics Club, said the event 'is about encouraging women to step outside their comfort zone and discover the variety that athletics has to offer'.
'We want women to enjoy themselves and perhaps discover something they didn't know they could do,' Catherine said.
The event will take place at the Town Park Running Track from 7pm to 9pm. Places must be booked in advance on eventmaster.ie.
