Load more Facebook Twitter LinkedIn WhatsApp A meeting held on Monday, September 7, 2026, between Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries and Chairman of the ACSAD Executive Council Ezzeddine Ben Cheikh, and Nasr Eddine Al-Obeid, Director General of the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD), focused on examining partnership mechanisms and expanding and strengthening technical and research cooperation between Tunisia and the organization. The meeting also focused on strategic initiatives related to the transfer of expertise and applied research, as well as on making direct use of the scientific and field-based solutions provided by ACSAD to support the development of Tunisia's agricultural sector. Discussions also addressed the need to tackle climate change through the implementation of joint projects aimed at adapting to climate change and mitigating its severe impact on natural resources and agricultural production. The two sides also discussed the development of livestock resources through the adoption of improved, high-yield breeds for meat and dairy production that are also better suited to arid climatic conditions. The minister expressed his strong appreciation for ACSAD's scientific standing, stressing that the organization's projects and programmes are aligned with the national priorities of Tunisia and Arab countries, particularly in linking field research with practical applications to advance agricultural and livestock production. For his part, Nasr Eddine Al-Obeid reviewed the organization's main initiatives, stressing the close interconnection between food security and water security in the Arab region. He also highlighted the main obstacles facing sustainable agricultural development, foremost among them climate change, worsening drought, declining groundwater and surface-water reserves, and increasing water scarcity. The official also called for greater efficiency in the use of available water resources across the various crop and livestock sectors. At the end of the meeting, which was attended by the delegation accompanying the ACSAD Director General, the minister's chief of staff and senior ministry officials, both sides reaffirmed their determination to continue coordination and intensify joint efforts in a way that supports the aspirations of Tunisia's agricultural sector and promotes the sustainable development of water and food resources.
