Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ABM Obaidul Islam has said the country's 28 percent young population could help resolve the shortage of blood if they voluntarily donate at least once a year.
He made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing a ceremony honouring voluntary blood donors at IDEB Bhaban in Dhaka. The event was organised by Quantum Foundation.
East West University Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Ashik Mosaddik presided over the programme, while M Rezaul Hasan, director of the voluntary blood donation programme, also spoke.
More than 300 donors were recognised with certificates, crests and medals for donating blood at least three, 10, 25 and 50 times. Platinum donor Kazi Hasan Ali, who has donated 51 times, Golden donor Rejeka Sultana who donated 26 times, and thalassaemia patient Masuma Hossain Tonni shared their experiences.
Organisers expressed gratitude to all donors and urged young people to come forward to help fully meet the country's blood demand.
