Chairing a meeting with a delegation of presidents and chief executive officers of leading commercial banks, the prime minister stressed the need to bridge the gap between loan approvals and actual disbursements, saying citizens would benefit from the programme only when approved funds reached them without delay. The meeting was informed that consultations were underway on a framework to facilitate developers' access to financing. The meeting was further informed that the government was increasing the SME lending target to Rs1,500 billion and the number of beneficiaries to 565,000 by June 2027. During the meeting, Shehbaz met the heads of the country's leading commercial banks and thanked the banking sector for supporting efforts to help citizens own homes, provide financial resources to small businesses and enhance farmers' productive capacity. Appreciating banks demonstrating outstanding performance in financing the Apna Ghar Programme, SMEs and the agricultural sector, the prime minister said small and medium-sized enterprises were the backbone of Pakistan's economy, and their growth would create employment opportunities and stimulate economic activity. He said the government had launched these initiatives to improve ordinary citizens' access to financing, support business owners and strengthen the productive capacity of farmers. Improved lending to SMEs, housing and agriculture would promote employment, investment, productivity and overall economic growth, he added. The prime minister directed the SBP to further simplify loan approval and disbursement procedures, remove obstacles to financing and enable more citizens to benefit from the schemes. He said agricultural financing was essential for improving farmers' economic well-being, increasing agricultural output and ensuring food security. Emphasising the need to prioritise small farmers, Shehbaz said access to finance would enable them to adopt modern agricultural practices and improve productivity. 'Expanding access to small farmers through agricultural financing is an urgent need.
