Jamie Lee Curtis reveals her all-time favourite acting job
Jamie Lee Curtis says one role from decades ago still remains her all-time favourite job, despite her long and successful acting career.
Curtis, 67, was recently speaking on NBC Universal's Backlot Pass about her new comedy series, Newlyweds, where reflected on her experience filming a sitcom years ago.
'I made a few movies and I had been making movies, but they were always outside of Los Angeles,' the actress said, explaining she was excited when she got the chance to film a TV pilot for ABC.
'And years and years and years ago, I had been making a movie, and then I came home, there was this half-hour pilot, and I did it for ABC, and I loved it."
She said she loved the experience, especially since she had mostly worked in film up to that point and had never done anything similar to a stage-style production. "I loved this idea because I've never done a play and I've only done movies.'
Although she loved the pilot, ABC initially decided not to pick it up, leaving Curtis disappointed. 'They didn't pick up the pilot and I was just so bummed out,' Curtis recalled.
However, after her film A Fish Called Wanda became a major success later that year, ABC reconsidered and decided to move forward with the sitcom after all.
The show eventually became Anything but Love, which Curtis said remains her favourite job she's ever had. She shared that she has spent years telling her agents that all she really wants is to do another sitcom.
'I'm 67 years old, and every single year, all I've ever said to my agents is, 'I want to do a sitcom. All I want to do is a sitcom.' It's my favourite job.'
Curtis explained that she especially loves the format of multi-camera sitcoms, including the rehearsal process and the unique rhythm of performing in front of a live audience.
She said that her passion for the format eventually led her to create her own opportunities within the genre.
'I love the whole part of it. Every aspect of it,' Curtis said. 'The dance with the cameras, the idea that you actually get to rehearse something and work it and learn a joke and play it, and I just never got to do it. And so I just decided to basically kind of create my own job and met Gail [Lerner], and that's why we're all here.'
Anything but Love ran for several seasons in the late 1980s and early 1990s and starred Curtis alongside actor Richard Lewis, who passed away in 2024.
Curtis will now return to the sitcom world with a guest role in Newlyweds, which premieres in October.
