Ribbon cutting set for Sandra Renee Greene Park Sept. 10

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, for the grand opening of Sandra Renee Greene Park at 810 N. Pine St. in Elizabethton. The playground was made possible through a donation from the late Louie Greene in memory of his daughter, Sandra Renee Greene. While serving overseas during the Vietnam War, Greene received word that his daughter had been stillborn. Earlier this year, Greene donated more than $160,000 to Elizabethton Parks and Recreation for playground equipment. After several meetings, Greene and Parks and Recreation staff decided to transform a plot of land along the Linear Trail into a new park and name it in Sandra's memory. The 1.3-acre Sandra Renee Greene Park includes a fenced playground where children can climb, slide and explore. The park is free and open to the public. 'Sandra Renee Greene Park will stand as a lasting tribute to Sandra, and as a testament to her father Louie's love, generosity and commitment to the children and families of our community,' said David Nanney, Elizabethton Parks and Recreation director.
