PMD forecasts more rain, thunderstorms in upper parts on Sept 4-5

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain and thunderstorms, including isolated heavy to very heavy showers, in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and other upper parts of the country on September 4 and 5. According to the Met Office, monsoon currents are continuing to enter the upper regions, while a westerly wave is expected to strengthen during the period. Rain is likely in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang, Attock, Lahore, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Wazirabad, Hafizabad and Kasur. The PMD also forecast rain and thunderstorms in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper Punjab, Potohar, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall possible. Hot and humid conditions, however, are expected to persist in southern parts of the country. Cathay Pacific cancels flights to Dubai, Riyadh until Dec. 1 The Met Office warned that heavy rainfall could cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Mardan, Swabi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Lahore and Sialkot. Flash floods in local streams and nullahs, as well as landslides in hilly areas, are also possible. Meanwhile, Rawalpindi Division Commissioner Salman Ghani directed all relevant departments to remain on high alert and ensure precautionary measures against possible urban flooding. He instructed WASA, Rescue 1122, Civil Defence, district administrations, municipal corporations, health authorities, police and traffic police to remain active in the field and maintain close coordination. Punjab launches Batch-III of Climate Leadership Internship Programme Authorities were also directed to ensure proper drainage in low-lying areas and keep dewatering pumps, machinery and other emergency equipment operational to respond immediately to water accumulation.
