New GREAT FALLS LP The Bite That Grows Up coming Oct 16th via NEUROT RECORDINGS

GREAT FALLS are a heavy noise rock band from the west coast of the United States. They released their album Objects Without Pain in September of 2023 (via NEUROT RECORDINGS). I was lucky enough to see them at Silk City in Philadelphia less than one month after they released Objects Without Pain. When listening to GREAT FALLS one can find their grief staring right back at them through the harsh noise. Accessing our grief and rage reminds us that our fates are intertwined. New music from GREAT FALLS could not have come at a better time. When there is so much in the world trying to force us into silence, we need music and art that keeps us going in the fight for a better world. Before listening to the new GREAT FALLS song 'Nicotine in the Spine', I was not sure if they could make a record heavier than Objects Without Pain. 'Nicotine in the Spine' feels like the best never-ending delivery of sludgy frenetic riffs accompanied by their familiar lamenting vocals.We were excited and grateful for the opportunity to ask the band some questions ahead of their upcoming album and tour. BN: Congratulations on your upcoming album,The Bite That Grows Up(via Neurot Recordings). What were some of the sources of inspiration for this record? Were there any specific artists or releases you were listening to during this time? GF: I've been trying to ripoff some ideas from The Downward Spiral for years and there are a few in there. Not sure what else we were particularly listening to or wanting to rip-off for this. We wanted some Protomartyr in there but not sure we succeeded. Next time, though, it's going to be blatant. BN: It's hard to believe your new single 'Nicotine in the Spine' is only one song because it feels like an epic multi-part story. What was the process like writing it? GF: Well, unless it's one of our shorter, faster songs, we really try and make each song fairly self-contained, in that it goes as many places as possible before feeling overstuffed. It's very much just feeling a rhythm and picking where, dynamically, it can go next. I think it started with those first two parts going back and forth and then it's just sitting there and thinking how to sort of craft the journey, to be pretentious about it. I tend to think of songs very visually in my head, as sort of a line curve. So it's really just seeing the song as what would make it move in a way where everything is connected but the listener doesn't exactly know where it's going… but, by the end, wrapping it up in a satisfactory way. I'm not sure how much those kinds of aims come through for the listener but it's what we hear that makes us feel like a song is done. BN: I also read that the song '...features additional vocals by Peter Clement Lund, the late guitarist/vocalist of Danish band and GREAT FALLS tourmates Kollapse, who tragically passed away a few weeks after tracking these vocals'. What was it like to work with Peter on this record? (For those who are not aware, Peter shared his journey with cancer publicly on instagram up until his passing.) GF: Well, we had known Peter for a while over the Internet. Demian had actually made a video for one of their songs years ago. We met the guys when we were in Denmark in 2024, and then in 2025 got to play shows with them. We became fast friends and were absolutely shocked and devastated to hear about his diagnosis fairly quickly after the tour. We were recording the record when his last treatment failed and we wanted a chance to memorialize him. He was pretty sick when we asked him to record something but he did amazing. We were very thankful it worked out and that his friends and family can have one more piece of him to remember. BN: GREAT FALLS are headed east for a tour in October with Kowloon Walled City and we're incredibly excited to see you again in Philadelphia. What are you most excited about for this upcoming tour? GF: Well, Scott (of Kowloon Walled City) has done our last three records and we're really good friends and also love the other guys. We also just love what they do. They're just this stripped down, precise thing but it still has a really resonant, emotional core. It's a total bro tour, though, just having a chance to hang out with them and yell at Scott for wearing longsleeves on stage (Who does that?!) and talk to Ian about when he was in Skankin' Pickle.
