Netflix Writer Behind ‘Devil in Ohio' Sent Wife's Nudes Around ‘Kanye West's' California Church, Suit Says

Andrew Wilder, 51, spoke out after his conviction for distributing private images of his estranged wife, though his statement came buried in court filings and divorce papers that paint a darker portrait than his words alone. The Netflix and TV writer, whose credits include 'Devil in Ohio' and CBS's 'Criminal Minds,' was convicted last week of violating California's revenge porn statute for sharing nude photos and video of Alison Wilder with church elders and Kanye West's personal pastor, Adam Tyson. The criminal conviction carries a November sentencing date, while a separate civil suit against Wilder and Placerita Bible Church in Santa Clarita continues to move forward. Alison Wilder filed for divorce five months before the August 2024 distribution of the images, according to the civil complaint. The papers state she 'endured domestic violence and abuse from her husband' throughout their more than decade-long marriage. Wilder had achieved sobriety for a period after seeking help, but relapsed in 2019, the divorce filings indicate. The civil suit alleges Wilder gave the intimate photographs and one video to church elders and Tyson to substantiate his accusation that Alison had cheated on him. The images, which contained intimate parts of her body, were then shared with her father, himself described as a high-ranking member of the parish. Her father was shown the photos from an iPad with the images blackened or obscuring Alison's intimate body parts, the papers say. 'The nude photos were presented as evidence of Defendant Wilder's accusation of adultery against her,' the suit reads. The complaint continues: 'The elders dissuaded Plaintiff's father from telling Plaintiff about the photos, and dissuaded reporting concerns to the police.' Tyson began leading Bible studies for Kanye West after the controversial artist started attending services at Placerita Bible Church in 2019. The connection between the Santa Clarita congregation and West brought national attention to the small church, though Tyson and the church now face scrutiny alongside Wilder in the civil proceedings. The divorce papers contain Alison's account of Wilder's behavior during the marriage's final years. 'Wilder often drank heavily and came home drunk late in the evening, stomping around the house, slamming doors, and playing obscene music with lyrics that exhibit violence and misogyny,' the suit states. Alison's filings also attribute specific racist remarks to Wilder in connection with his accusation of infidelity. 'Andrew thinks I cheated during marriage with a Mexican man, so Andrew continually makes horrible racist remarks in front of our children about it,' the papers state. One incident from April 4, 2024, is described in detail. 'As he was leaving in his truck with our children on April 4, 2024, Andrew rolled down all the windows in his truck and shouted at me, 'have fun with your Mexican boyfriend! Have fun eating tacos!'' The criminal case resolved last week with Wilder's conviction on the revenge porn charge for sharing the images with Tyson and others. The civil suit, which names both Wilder and the church as defendants, remains active with no trial date set. The distribution of the images came at a moment when the marriage had already formally begun to dissolve, with Alison having filed divorce papers months earlier citing the history of domestic violence. The overlapping timelines of the criminal conduct, the ongoing divorce, and now the civil litigation against both Wilder and his religious community have layered multiple legal proceedings onto the collapse of a marriage that spanned more than ten years. Wilder will face sentencing in November.
