After the surprising closure of BioWare by Electronic Arts, a trailer for the now discontinued Mass Effect 5 has surfaced. The video features in-engine scenes from a spy thriller and brings back Liara T'Soni. Look at the discontinued sequel One day after Electronic Arts closed the development studio BioWare and canceled all remaining projects, a video about the team's latest project is circulating online – and that makes BioWare's end even more painful for fans. The material shows excerpts from the now discontinued Mass Effect 5, which according to the video should be titled Mass Effect Universe. Electronic Arts laid off 400 employees as part of the restructuring, representing three percent of its total workforce. The development of the role-playing game was completely canceled. Mass Effect: Universe – The fifth part looked so promising The material was originally intended for Electronic Arts executives last year and was not intended for the public. According to an overlay in the video, it is based on pre-production assets and uses the game engine. On Reddit Apparently a former employee published the trailer. Journalist Jason Schreier quickly confirmed the authenticity of the recordings. The publisher himself has not yet commented on the video. Espionage and old acquaintances The trailer presents a spy story in which a new human protagonist, a former soldier, is supposed to prevent conflicts in advance. In a bar he meets the aged Asari Liara T'Soni, who fans already know from the original trilogy. In the trailer, they also fight together in a fight with firearms and telekinetic abilities. The development studio had previously indicated that Mass Effect 5 should take place hundreds of years after Mass Effect 3. The return of the Paragon Renegade system and romances were also planned. In addition to familiar elements such as a galaxy map and travel through space, the video shows an innovation in the composition of the crew. Prominently featured is a male Quarian alongside the protagonist, who, according to fans, could have become the first male Quarian on the team. To date, the series has only featured one female quarian as a recruitable character. A krogan also accompanies the group. In an internal announcement regarding the closure, Electronic Arts stated that the project was in the early stages of development. A suspected EA employee, however, wrote on Reddit that he had already seen a finished trailer for Mass Effect 5 a few months ago. Fired BioWare developer Tony de Waal noted that the game offered an unprecedented level of autonomy and freedom of choice. Around 50 people were recently entrusted with the development. The video appeared just before N7 Day on November 7th, when BioWare traditionally celebrated the franchise. Almost 17,000 people have now signed a petition calling on Electronic Arts to continue to support the series.
