Assam: 3 Journalists Held in Dhubri Over Rs 3 Lakh Extortion Case

Assam: Three journalists were arrested in Assam's Dhubri district for allegedly demanding Rs 3 lakh from a doctor, while another journalist named in the case is reportedly absconding, police said. The arrested accused have been identified as Sahil Shaikh, a correspondent of a private satellite news channel, and Dewan Jahangir Alom and Ashraful Alom, who reportedly work with local news portals. The fourth accused, Soiodur Rahman, a correspondent with Assam Talks, allegedly evaded arrest and is currently absconding. According to the complaint, the four journalists allegedly demanded Rs 3 lakh from a doctor, identified as Dr Chotka Rahman, by allegedly threatening him. The complaint was filed at Dhubri Sadar Police Station on Monday. The doctor allegedly paid Rs 20,000 in cash after fearing for his safety. The four accused also allegedly collected another Rs 65,000 from him through PhonePe. Thus, a total of Rs 85,000 was allegedly paid as an advance against the demanded amount. Following the complaint, Dhubri Police launched an operation and arrested Sahil Sheikh, Dewan Jahangir Alam and Ashraful Alam. Sahidur Rahman, the fourth person named in the complaint, remains absconding, according to the information available. A case has been registered at Dhubri Sadar Police Station under sections 61(2), 329(4), 127(2), 308(5), 309(4), 351(2), 351(3) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The case has been registered as Case No. 354/2026. Statements from the doctor and the owner of the chamber are expected to provide further details about the alleged incident.
