Expatriate Bangladeshi among 3 killed in Dhaka in 10 hours

Three people, including an expatriate Bangladeshi, were killed in three incidents at Shah Ali, Sabujbagh and Jatrabari in Dhaka within 10 hours until 1:00am on Monday. The deceased are Mehedi Hasan, 25, son of Md Alam of Sahebganj village under Faridganj upazila in Chandpur, Sifat Abedin, 27, so of Jainal Abedin of Jatrabari in Dhaka and Sagar Khan Imran, 40, of Rayerbagh in the capital. Of them, Sifat is an expatriate Bangladeshi. At Shah Ali, Mehedi was stabbed by a group of miscreants in front of Shah Ali Women's College at about 1:00am on Monday and was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he died at about 6:00am on the day. The police arrested Mahbubur Rahman, 28, and seized a switchblade knife allegedly used in the killing from Mahbub's possession. Shah Ali police station officer-in-charge Jahangir Alam said that Mehedi, a signboard maker by profession, used to live in the capital's Mirpur area and was killed over a money-related dispute. He said that Mehedi's elder brother filed a case with his police station in this connection. Hours before Mehedi's death, a Qatar expatriate was stabbed to death at a location under Sabujbagh police station in the city, allegedly over a relationship involving a woman. The Rapid Action Battalion arrested two men — Al Amin Hossain Joy, 27, and Md Sajidul Islam Sajid, 24 on early Monday in connection with the killing. According to RAB, Sifat had returned from Qatar about one and a half months ago and was in a relationship with a 23-year-old woman. Accused Sajid had reportedly been in a relationship with the woman for more than four years but was unaware of her relationship with Sifat. Joy, who had known her since their school days, allegedly had a grudge against Sifat. RAB said Joy allegedly used to visit the woman's rented room with associates to consume drugs and Sifat had objected to their visits. On September 6, Sifat went to the rented room riding on his motorcycle at about 3:00pm. After learning of his presence, Yasin, Anik, Tuhin, Raju and others allegedly went there, while Joy remained downstairs. Following an altercation, Yasin and Raju were injured. When Sifat attempted to leave, the attackers allegedly threw bricks at him, causing him to fall. Joy then allegedly struck him on the head with a stick while the others stabbed him repeatedly. They also vandalised his motorcycle before fleeing. Locals took Sifat to Mugda Medical College Hospital. He was later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died. Sifat's father filed a case with Sabujbagh police on Monday against Joy, Sajid, Yasin Arafat, Tuhin, Anik, Rabbi and Neha, along with two or three unidentified people. Meanwhile, the third killing occurred at Jatrabari at about 10:30pm on Sunday, when a group of armed men opened fire on two men in Dhalpur Sardar Goli, said Md Raju, officer-in-charge of Jatrabari police station. Sagar Khan Imran, 40, and Zakaria, 32, was injured in the attack and were rushed to the hospital, where Imran died while undergoing treatment, he said. 'We identified some of the attackers and are trying to arrest them. Police primarily believed that the killing occurred due to dispute over drug and establishing supremacy in the area,' he said.
