If you work with metal fabrication, manufacturing or engineering, you may have come across the term die cutting. But what exactly is die cutting, and when is it better than ordinary cutting methods? What Is Die Cutting? Die cutting is a manufacturing process where a specially made tool called a die is used together with a punch or press to cut a particular shape from a material. For metal work, it is commonly used for sheet metal blanking, punching, perforation and producing repeated components. For example, if you need 1,000 pieces of the same small metal bracket, plate or washer, producing each one manually can take a lot of time. A properly designed die can produce the same shape repeatedly. What Is the Difference Between Blanking and Punching? This is one area that often causes confusion. Blanking means cutting a particular shape out of a sheet, where the cut-out piece is the useful product. Punching, on the other hand, creates a hole or opening in the sheet, while the material removed becomes scrap. Both operations can be carried out using press tooling and are commonly used in metal production. When Is Die Cutting a Good Choice? Die cutting becomes particularly useful when you need: - Many identical metal parts - Consistent dimensions - Faster production - Repeated holes or shapes - Better production efficiency However, it may not always be the best option for a small quantity or a one-off job because making the die itself has a cost. For a single prototype, for example, CNC plasma cutting, laser cutting or another cutting method may make more economic sense. What Materials Can Be Die Cut? The material and thickness determine the type of tooling and machine required. Depending on the equipment available, die cutting can be used for materials such as: - Stainless steel - Galvanised sheet - Other suitable sheet materials The important thing is to match the material, thickness, shape and production quantity with the appropriate tooling. How Much Does Die Cutting Cost? There is no fixed price for die cutting. The cost can depend on the material, thickness, size of the component, complexity of the shape, quantity required and cost of making the die. This is why a die-cutting job should normally be assessed from a drawing, sample or proper dimensions before a price is given. Die Cutting or CNC Cutting A simple way to look at it is this: Small quantity or different designs: CNC cutting may be more suitable. Large quantity of the same design: Die cutting may become more economical. So, the cheapest cutting method is not necessarily the best one. The quantity you want to produce is one of the most important factors to consider. What Should You Provide Before Ordering Die-Cut Parts? If you want someone to produce a die-cut metal component for you, try to provide as much information as possible: Material → Thickness → Dimensions → Drawing/sample → Quantity → Required holes or shapes A proper drawing is always better, but even a physical sample or clear measurements can help the fabricator understand what you need. Die cutting is not simply about cutting metal. It is about using the right tooling and production method to make repeatable parts efficiently. If you are just starting out in metal fabrication or manufacturing, understanding the difference between die cutting, blanking, punching and CNC cutting can save you money and prevent you from choosing the wrong production method for a job.
