(WTAJ) — Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads easily through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes or even breathes nearby.
Early symptoms often resemble a bad cold or flu and can include fever, cough, runny nose, watery or red eyes, and sore throat. A red, blotchy rash typically appears later, often after the fever starts.
Measles is more than just a rash. It can lead to serious complications, including ear infections, pneumonia and, in some cases, brain inflammation. These risks are especially concerning for infants, young children, pregnant people and anyone with a weakened immune system.

Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, your family and the wider community. The CDC recommends two doses of the measles vaccine for children, and staying up to date on vaccination helps prevent outbreaks and limits spread.
If you think you or your child may have measles, call your healthcare provider before going into a clinic or office. This helps the care team prepare, protect other patients, and guide you on the safest next steps.
If you need help scheduling care or checking on vaccines, contact Mount Nittany Health at (814) 231-7000.
