Lucknow:
A 22-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide in Jankipuram area after her boyfriend refused to marry her, leading police to arrest the accused and register a case for abetment of suicide.
The deceased was identified as Neelam, a native of Sandaur village in Sitapur district. Police said she had been living in Lucknow where she worked as a domestic help. In a complaint, Neelam's father alleged she was in a relationship with Veeru Kumar (20), a resident of Surjanpur in Sitapur, and that he had repeatedly assured her he would marry her. The family claimed Veeru established a relationship with Neelam on the promise of marriage.
According to police, Neelam left her workplace without informing anyone on July 31. Her family alleged that when Neelam later met Veeru, he refused to marry her, after which she became emotionally distressed.
Police said Neelam was found dead on Sept 2, allegedly by hanging in a forested area under the limits of Jankipuram police station. Following the death, her father accused Veeru of driving her to take the extreme step.
During the investigation, police arrested Veeru from Kooda Chauraha in Dubagga. Officials said he worked as a cook at a restaurant in Faridipur and had known Neelam for about three months after they connected through phone calls.
During questioning, Veeru allegedly told investigators he refused marriage because they belonged to different castes and claimed he did not anticipate the outcome. Police said the probe is ongoing.
