Reacher Spinoff Confirms Major Book Departure for Fan-Favorite Character

Since its release in 2022, Reacher has turned into the most popular action show on television. With all its success, it comes as no surprise that the franchise is expanding with a sequel: Neagley . The new release will focus on the fan-favorite secondary character from the flagship series, Frances Neagley. Reacher is based on Lee Child's book series following Jack Reacher, but the new spinoff doesn't have a set story to adapt. Speaking to TVLine for its Fall Preview, franchise star Maria Sten revealed how Neagley makes a major book change. Reacher's Spinoff Builds Neagley's Story The Jack Reacher book series consists of 31 books at the time of writing, and several more short stories and novellas. The Prime Video action series, created by Nick Santora, doesn't follow the book order, but keeps relatively close to the source material. For Neagley , which Santora co-created with Nicholas Wootton, there is no novel yet, as the show builds on fragments about the new title character. The franchise will receive the first-ever Neagley-focused novel, Zero Margin , in March 2027. Sten explained, "I read all the books that Neagley is in, and I very much informed my character based on Lee Child's work, of course." She also credited "the work that Santora was doing on the page of the scripts" that helped her to expand Neagley's story. Sten even explained how she made a major change to the books and created her own backstory for Neagley . "I gave [Santora] a little backstory, and he tweaked it, and now we get to see that backstory. I think [this season] is about how different people experience and deal with trauma, and that that is, of course, why we are also diving into Neagley's trauma and why she cannot touch people." The actress, who played a main character in the first three seasons of the flagship series, detailed, "It is profound, what that [fear] does to a person and how that cuts them off from the world, I think in a lot of ways, because physical touch is such a big part of the human experience. And so of course something had to have happened to her for her to be that way. And that is what we are then answering, [about] her childhood and coming up through her teenage years in Chicago. I think the writers just did such an incredible job. What Happens in Neagley? Shane Mahood/Prime Unlike Reacher , which changes the location from one season to the next, Neagley is rooted in Chicago, where she is now a private detective. Details are sparse about what makes Neagley tick, but the spinoff series opens with the startling El-platform death of one of Neagley's very few loved ones, which sets off an investigation that will take her from the city streets to a rural commune riddled with controversy. Neagley will share the screen with Det. Hudson Riley ( The Night Agent 's Greyston Holt), a Chicago P.D. outsider, Keno (Jasper Jones), a low-level hustler with a sad past, Adeline Rudolph as Renee Birdwhistle, Matthew Del Negro as Pierce Woodrow, and Damon Herriman as Lawrence Cole. Speaking to CBR at the San Diego Comic-Con, Sten also teased that the spinoff will answer the most burning question about Neagley: her haphephobia, which has been hinted at during the series. "The reason for making the show is to answer the question like what is Neagley doing when she's not off like on Reacher's adventures, and I think, you know, she's in Chicago taking care of her dad, and that is sort of the world we wanted to flesh out."
