Gwyneth Paltrow answers critics after reports of a private Hamptons dinner for Sam Altman

Gwyneth Paltrow has responded to the online backlash surrounding reports that she is hosting a private dinner for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at her Hamptons home.
The controversy began after journalist Matthew Belloni reported in his Puck newsletter that invitations were being prepared for an "off-the-record al fresco dinner" hosted by Paltrow in honour of Altman. The report quickly gained attention online, with social media users questioning the idea of the actress and entrepreneur hosting a private gathering for the billionaire technology executive.
Rather than issue a lengthy statement addressing the criticism, Paltrow appeared to lean into the internet reaction. On August 20, she shared a series of parody invitations on Instagram, each changing the supposed guest of honour.
The invitations referenced fictional and pop culture figures including M3GAN, Samantha Jones, SHREK and Jessica Rabbit. Another invitation referenced Chanty Beluga, a viral character created by comedian Courtney O'Donnell.
Paltrow accompanied the posts with a deliberately absurd caption: "We're serving swordfish burritos, cheddar foam lattes on request."
The posts came after the reported invitation had circulated widely online. Some social media users criticised Paltrow over her reported connection to the event, while others questioned the broader relationship between celebrities, wealthy technology figures and the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence industry.
The invitation itself has also become part of the online discussion. Journalist Shayan Sardarizadeh suggested on X that the graphic was likely AI-generated, adding another layer to the conversation surrounding the reported dinner. The original report described the gathering as private and off the record, although details about the event have not been independently confirmed by Paltrow or Altman.
Paltrow, 53, has previously found herself at the centre of viral internet moments and has occasionally responded with humour. Her latest reaction follows another recent period in which she became involved in a technology related publicity story, highlighting how quickly celebrity appearances can become part of online conversations surrounding Silicon Valley.
Altman, whose company OpenAI operates ChatGPT, has become one of the most recognisable figures in the artificial intelligence industry. His public profile has also made his appearances at celebrity events and private gatherings a frequent subject of online discussion.
Paltrow has separately discussed technology and defence issues on her Goop podcast. In June, she hosted Anduril co founder Trae Stephens, with the conversation covering developments in defence technology and America's relationship with the defence industry.
For the reported Hamptons gathering, however, Paltrow has not publicly confirmed the full details of the event. PEOPLE reported that representatives for Paltrow and OpenAI were contacted for comment.
The actress's decision to respond through parody invitations has shifted the focus from the original report towards the increasingly surreal online reaction. By replacing Altman's name with fictional characters and viral personalities, Paltrow appeared to acknowledge the criticism while turning the controversy into a joke of her own.
