Lucknow: The urology department of Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) has performed its first a robot-assisted renal transplant (RART). The recipient was an 18-year-old woman suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The transplant was performed under the mentorship of Dr Samit Chaturvedi of KIMS Hyderabad, officials said, adding that the procedure cost around Rs 4.25 lakh. The patient is clinically stable and recovering well under the supervision of the transplant team. Officials said robot-assisted renal transplant is a minimally invasive procedure involving small incisions and is associated with reduced blood loss, less post-operative pain, faster recovery, fewer wound-related complications and better cosmetic outcomes compared with conventional open surgery. The surgery was performed by a team comprising Prof Ishwar Ram Dhayal, Prof Alok Srivastava, Prof Sanjeet Singh and Dr Mukteshwar. The nephrology team included Prof Dr Abhilash Chandra and Prof Dr Namrata Rao.
