CBI: Independent review confirms investigation findings into Megan Trussell's death

DENVER (KDVR) — The Colorado Bureau of Investigation concluded its independent review into the death of 18-year-old Megan Trussell. The independent review determined that Trussell died by suicide in early 2025. Trussell was a CU-Boulder student when she went missing in February that year. Her body was found in Boulder Canyon a week after she was last seen. An independent state-level review of the investigation into Trussell's death was initiated in January after a request by the Trussell family. It was conducted under the authority of SB 22-150. The review took place over roughly seven months, with examinations of the investigative record, looking into digital evidence, cellular analysis, campus records, body camera footage, searches and forensic files. The following was included in the release as the key findings in this state-level review: Based on the totality of the record, and with input from Cold Case Review Team experts, the CBI concluded that the original response and investigation by the Boulder County Sheriff's Office and partner agencies were reasonable, substantial and supported by the available evidence. Key findings include: The case was presented on July 21 to the CBI's Cold Case Review Team, which is comprised of 40 professionals, including law enforcement, forensics experts, toxicologists and victim advocates, one of whom read a letter on the Trussell family's behalf. CBI Director Armando Saldate III provided the following statement in the release: No administrative review can undo the profound loss experienced by the Trussell family or answer every remaining question. However, this statutory process ensures that every piece of evidence was examined with the utmost seriousness, rigor, and respect. We offer these findings with deep compassion for Megan's grieving loved ones and a commitment to continuous improvement in law enforcement practices.' FOX31 received the following from the Trussell family, following the announcement: Today's meeting with the CBI left us with more questions than answers. They appeared disorganized and unprepared, and their answers were often contradictory and patronizing in nature. When pressed for further explanation, many of the answers we received today seemed to contradict the certainty reflected in CBI's written conclusions. CBI did not know basic facts about the case until today, including that the family was the source of locating Megan's phone and key video evidence. Today did not bring closure. It reinforced why we are still fighting for real, complete answers about what happened to our daughter. Our next step is obtaining the complete autopsy report and photographs, which our family has repeatedly been denied. We deserve the opportunity to have that evidence reviewed by an independent expert with no connection to the agencies that have already reached conclusions in Megan's case.'
