A Malaysian Airlines aircraft from Kuala Lumpur to Jeddah made an emergency landing at Chennai airport on Monday due to a technical issue with one of the engines. Officials of Airports Authority of India (AAI) said the flight departed with 186 passengers from Kuala Lumpur at 3.30 p.m., and a little later, when the pilot suspected that the engine number two was malfunctioning, he requested the Air Traffic Control (ATC) at Chennai airport permission for landing. The authorities made all the necessary safety arrangements, and the flight made an emergency landing at the airport at 4.40 p.m. The passengers were deboarded safely and have been given accommodation, an official said. 'The aircraft is grounded now and the airline is making arrangements for an alternative flight. But it is not clear yet when the flight will depart from the airport,' he added. An Air India Express from Tiruchi to Singapore was also diverted to Chennai on Monday due to a technical issue. The flight, with 179 passengers, left from Tiruchi at 4.45 p.m., and after a technical glitch was detected, it landed safely at 5.52 p.m. and vacated the runway on its own power.
