A mural dedicated to the memory of war, sacrifice and freedom was completed today in Pristina, realized with the support of the Capital City's Directorate of Culture.
On the occasion of the completion of the mural, the Deputy Mayor of Pristina, Besianë Musmurati, and the Director of Culture, Isah Mustafa, together with the artist OrangeGirl, who created the work, visited the space where the mural now becomes part of the urban landscape and public memory of the capital.
The mural depicts the four former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army who are being held in The Hague and builds a visual narrative about war, deprivation, imprisonment and freedom, as part of a history that continues to have weight in Kosovo's collective memory.
"This mural now becomes part of the public space and memory of Pristina. It is a reminder of our path to freedom, of the sacrifice and of the people who were part of that path. Pristina remembers and Pristina awaits the return of the liberators," said Musmurati.
Portraits done in red symbolize struggle, sacrifice, revolt, and emotional tension.
The silhouettes of the soldiers at the bottom of the portraits represent the identity of the fighter and their contribution to freedom. Their positioning in the place where the tie would normally be symbolizes the transition from fighter to public and state-building figure, linking their contribution to the fight for freedom with their later engagement in state-building and the independence of Kosovo.
The wire in the background symbolizes restriction, separation, and isolation, while the birds flying above it represent freedom and transcending physical barriers.
The mural was created by artist OrangeGirl, with the support of the Capital City's Directorate of Culture.
The civic platform "Freedom Has a Name" thanks the Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Pristina, Besiana Musmurati, for her continued engagement, cooperation and solidarity with the activities organized in the framework of waiting for the decision for the liberators Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi.
Pristina remembers. Pristina waits. Kosovo awaits the return of the liberators.
