NHL Notebook: Former Leaf Fraser Minten inks 7-year extension worth $7.2 million annually with Bruins

A former Toronto Maple Leafs prospect has signed a long-term deal with a rival. On Tuesday morning, the Boston Bruins announced that forward Fraser Minten was signed to a seven-year contract extension worth $7.2 million annually. Minten, who was originally selected in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft by the Maple Leafs, appeared in four games with the Leafs in 2023-24 and got a bit of an extended look in 2024-25, recording four points in 15 games along with 13 points in 26 AHL games. Only a few months later, he was part of what's looking like the worst Toronto Maple Leafs trade in recent memory when the Leafs shipped him to the Bruins along with a first-round pick in exchange for defenceman Brandon Carlo. Minten cracked the Bruins opening night roster in 2025-26 and had a breakout season, scoring 17 goals and adding 35 points in 82 games for his age-21 season. Meanwhile, Carlo had an injury-riddled season amidst what was a horrendous campaign for the Maple Leafs as a whole as they missed the playoffs. The one saving grace from that deal is that the Leafs lucked into a draft lottery win, earning them the right to retain their top-5 protected pick to select Gavin McKenna first overall, but it was still a lopsided deal in Boston's favour and one that contributed to Brad Treliving losing his job. 'Since joining our organization, Fraser has continued to grow and earn the accelerated trust of his teammates and coaching staff. His hockey sense, competitiveness, responsible two-way game, and offensive growth make him a valuable player for our group. This is a mutual long-term commitment that reflects our confidence in Fraser and the important role he will play, as well as Fraser's belief in our team moving forward.' The 2026-27 NHL season kicks off on September 29, where the Maple Leafs will host the Montreal Canadiens while Minten and the Bruins host the New York Rangers.
