The organization consists of approximately eight to 10 active volunteers serving animals throughout Harrison County. It is not county funded, does not operate a traditional animal shelter and is not a 24-hour animal control service. AD The Humane Society operates a small adoption center primarily for emergencies, vaccinations and meet-and-greets. The facility is not equipped to accept every stray animal, unwanted litter or pet surrendered by an owner. The organization's primary responsibility is helping abused and neglected animals. Volunteers also work to control the county's feral cat population. This year, the Humane Society has raised money to spay and neuter approximately 140 feral cats in addition to cats taken into its care because of abuse, neglect or abandonment. The cats also receive veterinary care and vaccinations before feral cats are returned to their colonies. The organization is funded through donations and fundraisers, which pay for veterinary care, food, traps, transportation and other expenses. Volunteers are not paid for their time or reimbursed for mileage. Residents with animal emergencies should contact the Harrison County Sheriff's Office. The sheriff's office handles emergency situations and can contact Humane Society volunteers when their assistance is needed. The Humane Society also encourages residents to spay and neuter their pets. A low-cost spay and neuter clinic is advertised once a month through AlterClinic.
