For this month's Go 4 It, WDIV is partnering with the Detroit Zoo. On Wednesday, Sept. 23, we'll be at the Detroit Zoo's main entrance from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., collecting handheld electronic devices for recycling to support gorilla conservation initiatives. If you're heading to our Go 4 It event, please park and walk up to donate. Those who make a donation will get a free ticket to the zoo -- one ticket for every person who donates at least one device. The zoo is open from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. on Sept. 23, but tickets are valid through March 31. If you're unable to stop by, you can donate here. What are we collecting? Note: We will NOT be accepting laptops! How could an E-waste donation help gorillas? You probably use an electronic device every day without thinking about its impact on gorillas in Africa. Here's the deal -- the materials used to make many of these devices are mined in or near gorilla habitats. Mining can damage these habitats and contribute to threats facing gorilla populations. By donating your electronics, you can help reduce the demand for mining in gorilla habitats while supporting conservation efforts.
