VanNess, who said he has flown about 400 hours in a Cessna but was flying a Cirrus aircraft at the time, needed to redirect to Gillespie Field in nearby El Cajon. Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport is located about 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. Emrgency crews respond to the scene of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation of the crash.
