Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought, 'When did all that happen?' Not in a dramatic, existential way. More in a 'Why is my eyeliner heading in a downwards trajectory' kind of way. If you're in your 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's or even 80's (do you know my oldest client has been 94?), you may have noticed that the makeup you've been applying for years suddenly doesn't look quite the same. Your foundation seems to sit differently, eyeshadow disappears into your eyelids. And you may have given up on eye makeup altogether. Your lipstick seems to have developed a habit of bleeding out into your face & everything settles into the nearest wrinkle. And before you start berating yourself, here's what you need to know.. You haven't forgotten how to do your makeup. Your face has changed. As we get older, our skin texture changes, our colouring can change and our face shape subtly changes too. Hormonal changes can leave our skin drier, more sensitive or, on some days, behaving like it has a personal vendetta against us. And that's not even mentioning the menopause (more on that later) Hot flushes have a lot to answer for when you've spent 20 minutes doing your makeup only to start sweating before you've found your car keys. This is why I believe women over 40 don't need to wear less makeup. We simply need to apply it differently. Think light layers. Start with your skin. If your foundation is sitting in every little bit of texture, try using a lighter layer and adding coverage only where you need it. Your skin should still look like skin. Try applying less foundation but getting more confident with your blusher & bronzer. These are the products which give our face shape, structure, warmth, colour & character. With eyeshadow, stop trying to recreate the eye shape you had at 25. Look straight ahead, keep your eyes open, no pulling or tugging at the skin and place your definition where it can actually be seen. A small change can make a surprisingly big difference. And don't forget your brows. They can become sparser as we get older, so a softly defined brow can bring structure back to the face without looking drawn on. I find a skinny pencil best. Most importantly, don't let anyone tell you that getting older means you should stop enjoying makeup. I'm not trying to make women look younger. I want women to look like themselves, feel confident and know exactly what works for them now. Ageing is going to happen whether we like it or not. We may as well have good makeup on while we're doing it. And if in doubt, please call a professional..Or me! I have 175 five star google reviews from women who wish they hadn't waited so long to have a makeup lesson. It really can change how you approach your makeup & give you a whole new routine. Life is far too short to feel frustrated by makeup. We get stuck in ruts and I can definitely help you break them. Call 02890132653 or book online at www.Dollypond.com
