CANBY, Ore. (KPTV) - The Clackamas County District Attorney's Office has released more details about a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened in Canby last week.
The shooting happened on Thursday, Sept. 3, at about 10:30 p.m. at the Sequoia Grove Apartments at 259 Sequoia Parkway.
The DA's office said officers responded to the complex after 34-year-old Mario Francisco Mendoza Jr. tried to force his way into an apartment. Officers tried to detain him in the parking lot, but he did not comply with commands and ran away.
During a brief pursuit, the DA's office said Mendoza turned toward the officers with a handgun drawn and fired at them.
Sgt. Britton Nelson and Sgt. Allen Miller with the Canby Police Department returned fire, hitting Mendoza. Mendoza died at the scene.
According to the DA's office, the officers fired more than 20 shots and the incident was captured on body-worn camera. Both have been placed on paid critical incident leave.
