Nullah Lai Water Level Exceeds Evacuation Threshold As Heavy Rain Continues

RAWALPINDI, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 1st Sep, 2026) The water level in Nullah Lai at Katarian Bridge reached 27.5 feet, exceeding the evacuation threshold of 20 feet and prompting authorities to issue an evacuation alert for vulnerable and low-lying areas. Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi Captain (Retd) Nadeem Nasir said WASA, Rescue 1122, Civil Defence, Rawalpindi Waste Management Company and the Municipal Corporation Rawalpindi had been placed on high alert and a rain emergency imposed in view of heavy rainfall. He directed the concerned departments to remain fully prepared to deal with any emergency. Managing Director WASA Rawalpindi Aziz Ullah said staff and heavy machinery had been deployed in low-lying areas, particularly Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk Underpass, Murree Road, Dhok Khaba, Circular Road and Sadiqabad. He said Nullah Lai and drains across the city were being continuously monitored, adding that the water level had reached 27.5 feet at Katarian and 21.5 feet at Gawalmandi. According to WASA, intense rainfall was continuing in the catchment areas of Nullah Lai and was expected to persist for another hour, with water levels likely to rise further. The increased flow at Katarian was expected to move downstream and subsequently affect the Gawalmandi area, the district administration said. All concerned departments and stakeholders have been directed to remain on high alert, initiate necessary evacuation and emergency response measures in vulnerable and low-lying areas, and take all possible steps to ensure public safety.
