Ethereum Protocol Cluster Sets December 2029 Deadline
The foundation's Protocol Cluster published the commitment on Sept. 7, pairing it with the first unified tier list the group has ever produced for a single Ethereum network upgrade.
Nine internal teams graded the submissions. They filed 397 separate assessments, rejected 28 proposals outright and set a deadline covering execution, consensus and data, meaning the entire base layer rather than one isolated piece.
Protocol Cluster called the date self-imposed, since nobody can schedule the arrival of a machine capable of breaking the elliptic curve cryptography that secures ordinary accounts today. The target stays non-negotiable until at least January 2027, when outside specialists reassess the pace of progress.

Fredrik Svantes Ties Hegota To Quantum Timeline
Fredrik Svantes, who leads protocol coordination at the foundation, said the cluster is "aggressively targeting" a quantum-resistant Layer 1 no later than December 2029. He added that the commitment already shapes which proposals engineering teams recommend for Hegota, the fork expected to follow next year's Glamsterdam release. Ethereum is not quantum-resistant today.
Accounts and validators still rely on signature schemes that a sufficiently powerful quantum machine could unwind, although nothing built so far comes close to that capability. The cluster named two must-ship proposals for Hegota, one of them making account abstraction native to the protocol and laying the groundwork for post-quantum authentication.
Planning documents now tell developers to assume a hypothetical breakthrough could land as early as 2030, an assumption the group concedes runs ahead of most credible forecasts. That timing matches migration targets set independently by Google, Cloudflare and Microsoft. Reaching full resistance from a Glamsterdam launch in late 2026 would demand a hard fork roughly every 7.2 months, a cadence that leaves almost no room for slippage.
Vitalik Buterin Warnings Preceded The Roadmap
Pressure to move faster has been building since last autumn. Vitalik Buterinwarned at a developer conference in Buenos Aires in November that elliptic curve cryptography could fall before the 2028 U.S. presidential election, and he urged the ecosystem to complete its transition within four years.
He has put the odds of a cryptography-breaking machine arriving before 2030 at roughly 20%, citing forecasts drawn from the prediction platform Metaculus.
Those warnings have reordered what developers work on first. Ethereum's last major fork, Fusaka, went live on Dec. 3 and dealt largely with rollup data handling, while post-quantum readiness now sits among five long-running research tracks alongside fast finality, privacy, state and zkEVM.
