Deadly Florida Shooting Under Police Investigation

Fort Pierce Police are investigating a Sept. 3 shooting that left a man dead and are asking the public for help with information, an official said Sept. 4. The identity of the deceased was not immediately released. Maj. Michael Santiago said shortly after 6 p.m. Sept. 3 officers patrolling the area of North 16th Street heard multiple shots fired. They drove toward the area of the 100 block of North 16th Street and found a man with multiple gunshot wounds under a carport, he said. St. Lucie County Fire District crews took the man to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce where he died of his injuries. 'The preliminary investigation indicates that, at some point, the victim, who does not live there, showed up, and was making verbal threats to people in the area,' Santiago said. 'There are witness accounts saying that they did in fact see a what appeared to be a firearm in his waistband.' Santiago said at some point shots were fired, and the man fell. The man who was shot arrived in a gray car, which Santiago said still was running when officers arrived. 'We do know that the victim based on witness accounts was making verbal threats of harm to people,' Santiago said. 'We just don't know who he was talking to.' Cartridge casings were at the scene, as was a firearm believed to be associated with the deceased. Witnesses reported seeing three or four masked men flee the scene.
