The 100-Story Political Building

Imagine all statewide campaign cash as a100-story building. Republicans occupy roughly96 floors. Democrats have about4. Now look at the penthouse. Greg Abbott has more than $67 million in cash on hand. Dan Patrick has about $35.3 million. Together, they control roughly $102.5 million. That's an extraordinary concentration of political money. And money buys more than campaign signs. It buysTV and radio ads, mailers, digital advertising, polling, consultants and staff—the machinery needed to keep a political message in front of voters over and over again. This is why the story isn't simply about fundraising in 2026. It's about what happens whenyears of holding office build donor networks, donor networks build campaign war chests, and those war chests help protect the people already holding office. The cycle becomes: Power → donors → money → messaging → power. That's not a literal monopoly. But it can create a political environment where competition becomes extraordinarily difficult. And then there's the question ofgreed. How much campaign money is enough? At some point, accumulating tens of millions of dollars isn't simply about being able to communicate with voters. It becomes about maintaining the financial capacity to dominate the political conversation. If you've held the office, built the donor network, accumulated the money and controlled the megaphone for years, you also have to accept responsibility for the results. You can't hold the power and then pretend you're an outsider. Texas voters deserve to ask what all that money and power have actually produced—and who benefits from keeping the 100-story building this way.
