The second-largest reservoir by capacity in the United States, Lake Powell, has reportedly hit a record low highlighting the growing crisis across the Colorado River Basin.
The significant decline is causing anxiety about water supplies and hydropower for millions across the American West. Lake Powell's poll elevation fell to 3,519.91 feet surpassing the previous bet of 3,519.92 feet set in April 2023 on Saturday.
Federal water officials cautioned that daily level measurements are preliminary and subject to revision meaning the new record could be retracted considering its narrow margin.
Despite Saturday's reading, the lake's downward trend means the actual record low is fast approaching.
Jack Schmidt, a senior research scientist at Lake Powell said: 'If you add the two of these reservoirs together, the last time the joint contents where this low was in 1957 before there was even a Lake Powell.
Crucially, Lake Powell and Lake Mead store the overwhelming majority of Colorado River water used for urban agriculture in Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, Mexico and sovereign tribal nations.
Water from lakes is also used to generate hydroelectricity and to maintain a steady flow of water downstream and regulate the smoothing of the water supply during droughts or periods of sparse snowpack.
The director of the Water Resources at the University of Arizona detailed the situation as a natural disaster.
'Now there's lots of uncertainty, but [the Bureau of Reclamation's] most probable forecast right now is 75 percent of average [for water inflows into Lake Powell]. If that's what really happens, our crisis only deepens, only gets more significant, only gets even worse than it is. If we were to get an exceptional year, such as what we got in 2023, we would remain in crisis.'
And Schmidt underlined that there is a low correlation between an E1 Nino and a crucial snowpack in the Rockies. The significant impacts of climate change have resulted in gradual drying of regions into the reservoirs and average or fails to maintain baseline discharge in which ice turns directly into vapor and evaporation.
The federal agency overseeing water governance declared its plan for managing the Colorado River when the current terminates at the end of the year, but it did not specify the size of the cuts. This move came from Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming falling short of an accord on future allocations after more than three years of negotiations.
Further Megdal said: 'What we should be doing that we're not already doing is really looking at what curtailments or what cutbacks on the [water] demand side we can do, how quickly we can do them and what are the opportunities to substitute other water supplies.'
