Mildred E. McDowell, 95, Stockholm

Posted Monday, September 7, 2026 3:49 pm STOCKHOLM -- Mildred E. McDowell, age 95, passed away at her home, surrounded by her devoted family. Mildred was born on September 19, 1930, to the late William and Eva (Boileau) Sherman in Waddington, NY. She later moved to Madrid in 1935, and graduated from High School in 1949. She was employed at Harlem Valley State Hospital where she met her soon to be husband, Robert 'Bob' McDowell, as he had worked in the heating department. They relocated back to the North Country as she was employed with Moongate Nursing Home in Canton, NY, then later as a custodian of the Madrid Library. She was also a Girl Scout Leader for the youth in Utica, NY, and at one time and later for Brownies in Madrid, NY. She also volunteered to work for the Madrid Dam Music Series for many years. She also taught Bible Class for 27 years at the United Methodist Church of Madrid. As Mildred and Bob started their family, Mildred's love had expanded to open her home to three foster children as well; Donald, Barbara and Peter. She was also instrumental in helping Massena Veterans Clinic get started in the St. Lawrence Centre Mall. She is survived by her children, Margaret 'Peggy' LaRue of Potsdam, NY, Marie Weeks of Madrid, NY, Mary Ann McDowell of Ogdensburg, NY. She is also survived by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sister Ruth Koch of Virginia and Floyd Sherman of Potsdam, NY, along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Bob in March of 1994, and a son William 'Bill' McDowell, along with her siblings Margaret Moulton, Lodine Stiles, Mayfred McClelland, Marvin, Morton and Morton Sherman. Calling hours for Mildred will be held at the Phillips Memorial Home, located at 20 Church Street in Madrid, NY, on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Rick Sinclair officiating.
