SPLM Former Detainees revoke Isaiah Hakim's membership

The SPLM Former Political Detainees, or SPLM-FDs, have revoked Isaiah Hakim Garang's membership, a day after he accused Vice President Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior of incitement. Hakim condemned Nyandeng on Monday over remarks urging young people to speak out against what she described as mistakes in the way the country was being governed. Nyandeng made the remarks during the funeral of former Minister of Finance and Planning Kosti Manibe last month. Hakim, who served as the group's Chief Whip, called on the public, particularly young people, to reject what he described as calls for confrontation and instead support the government as the country prepares for the 2026 elections. Earlier on Tuesday, the SPLM-FDs disowned Hakim's remarks, saying he was not authorized to speak on behalf of the group. In a joint statement, three leaders of the SPLM Former Detainees — General Gier Chuang Aluong, Madut Biar Yel and Dr Majak D'Agoot — said Hakim's position as the Former Detainees' representative in parliament does not give him the political authority to speak for the entire group. In a letter dated September 8, 2026, the three leaders revoked Hakim's membership with immediate effect. They cited alleged violations of the SPLM-FD code of conduct and internal rules. The leaders accused Hakim of speaking publicly on behalf of the group without authorization or the consent of its members and leadership. They also said his conduct was inconsistent with the discipline, respect and accountability expected of SPLM-FD members. The letter states that Hakim is no longer authorized to act in the name of the SPLM-FD, represent the group in any official or public capacity, or present himself as a member. The leaders say relevant government institutions, including the Revitalized Transitional National Legislative Assembly and the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission, will be notified of his change in status. They have also directed Hakim to return SPLM-FD resources, records and government materials in his possession to the relevant government departments.
