TTAADC Village Council Polls: Tipra Motha, BJP Leaders File Nominations

In several areas, BJP and TIPRA Motha candidates were seen together following the recent decision of the NDA partners to contest the Village Committee polls jointly. At Jampui Jala, however, TIPRA Motha candidates appeared to lead the mobilisation, with supporters gathering in large numbers. TIPRA Motha candidate Monkumar Debbarma, who submitted his nomination to BDO Bahadur Reang, said the tribal areas had suffered from the absence of elected village-level bodies and expressed confidence that, if elected, he would work to address local problems and improve basic facilities. BJP candidate Pramit Marak, contesting from Modhya Ghaniyamara VC, Ward No. 1, Seat No. 2, also expressed confidence in victory, claiming substantial support for the BJP. He said elected representatives would work through the village-level system to ensure basic facilities such as electricity, drinking water and other government-supported development works. The nominations came after the NDA partners BJP, TIPRA Motha and IPFT recently announced a joint electoral strategy following discussions in New Delhi involving Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Manik Saha and TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma. The alliance marks a significant shift in Tripura's tribal politics, where TIPRA Motha had earlier been a major political challenger to the BJP. Village Committee elections, covering 587 Village Committees and 4,597 seats are taking place after long ten years and after Supreme Court judgment following a case filed by Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma who repeatedly raised questions against the BJP for not holding the election. Meantime, the Opposition, particularly the CPI(M), has alleged that at several places its candidates were prevented from filing nominations and faced threats and intimidation. The Left Front has demanded that candidates be allowed to participate freely in the electoral process without political interference. Earlier in the day NDA ally IPFT general secretary Swapan Debbarma was allegedly attacked and critically injured by Motha party supporters in Hejamala block office where he went to submit a letter on his way returning to his house at Khowai.
