Southend United ladies follow men by fighting back to secure victory

'I was delighted the men's team won and we did it the same way too. 'There seems to be that mentality at Southend and I'm very happy with this result. 'It was a sloppy 15 minutes from our standards but to fight back and get four goals was a great response. 'We thoroughly deserved the win in the end.' Wormley raced into a two-goal lead through Phoebe Ware and Jessica Ronan-Cooper finishes inside the opening 17 minutes, but a drinks break and double substitution midway through the first half proved to be the catalyst for the Shrimpers to comeback. Abbey Dell halved the deficit straight after the restart with her first goal of the season and the equaliser arrived on 38 minutes through Georgia Hyland. There was still time before the break for Maizie Kelly to put Southend in front and Darcy Drewitt completed the scoring in second-half stoppage time from the penalty spot. And Sheldrick was keen to ensure all the credit went towards his players. 'It's all down to the girls and their mentality,' he stressed. 'They know they weren't good enough early on but the reaction was great. 'They played some fantastic football and the credit goes to them. 'I'm very happy with the three points.' The victory was Southend's second of the season and puts them fourth in Division One South of the Eastern Region Women's Football League. And Sheldrick is pleased with the way things have been going so far. 'We've had three games, two wins and one loss to a good Chelmsford side,' said Sheldrick. 'I'm happy so far but we need to make sure we carry this momentum forward now.' The Shrimpers are back in action on Sunday when they host Enfield Town at Garon Park. The match gets underway at 2pm and will see Enfield playing their first league game of the season so far.
