MP's Anika bags bronze as national aquatic c'ship begins in Indore

Indore : The home crowd had something to cheer about on the opening day of the 43rd Sub-Junior and 52nd Junior National Aquatic Championship-2026, as Madhya Pradesh diver Anika Anand Chaurasia stepped onto the podium with a bronze in Girls G-II Platform event at IDA International Swimming Pool on Monday. Chaurasia produced a composed performance to score 152.15 points and finish third in a field led by Maharashtra 's Manasvini Shashikant Sawant. Sawant won the gold with 162.55 points, while compatriot Kanak Ashok Shanku took silver with 162.20. The medal gave the hosts an early boost in a championship that has brought together young aquatic talent from across the country. Organised jointly by Madhya Pradesh Swimming Association and Indore District Swimming Association, the national championship features swimming, diving and water polo competitions. The diving programme produced several strong performances on the opening day. Maharashtra's Sambhav Suresh Cherchar won Boys G-III Platform title with 233.80 points, finishing ahead of teammate Shaurya Sandeep Patil and Manipur 's Chakpram Tomthin Singh. Manipur also enjoyed a strong outing in Boys G-II 3M Springboard, with Arubam Benhar taking gold with 358.55 points. Hirom Bonson Singh claimed silver, while Bengal's Rudranil Pradhan finished third. In Boys G-I and G-II Platform Synchro, Services Sports Control Board pair of Supredeep Saha and Rishav Das topped the standings with 222.81 points. Maharashtra finished second and Manipur third. Water polo league matches were also held as teams from different states began their campaigns. Later, the day's programme was disrupted by rainfall. With heavy showers continuing during the afternoon and evening, the remaining events scheduled for Monday were postponed. The championship will continue for the next four days.
