Mounties in Cold Lake, Alta., seized 72 long-barrel firearms and a crate of ammunition during a traffic stop in the city. Mounties stopped a vehicle on 50 Avenue just before 4 a.m. on Aug. 19. The vehicle was initially seized pending a search warrant, and the driver was given a 24-hour roadside sanction. The next day, upon approval of the warrant, officers found the firearms. The sole occupant of the searched vehicle was at the time under a five-year firearms prohibition. Mounties say he has a history of firearms-related offences. A 36-year-old Cold Lake man was arrested on Sept. 3 and is now charged with possession of firearms contrary to order, possession of a firearm when knowing possession is unauthorized, resisting/obstructing a peace officer, and breach of recognizance. He was brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody. He is set to appear in court on Tuesday.
