(WITN) - An impaired driver is facing charges after striking a fire truck responding to a deadly crash on Sunday afternoon. Victor Gonzalez was charged with driving while impaired and reckless driving. Troopers and the Farmville Fire Department were called to a fatal car crash pin-in on I-587 at the NC 121 overpass bridge near Farmville. The Highway Patrol says Gonzalez was driving eastbound when he hit a stationary fire truck. The impact threw the firefighter out the back of the truck, according to troopers. The 22-year-old Gonzalez was hospitalized with serious injuries, while the firefighter was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Fountain Rural Fire Chief Jonathan Landen says the firefighter has a broken wrist and will have surgery.
