On Thursday, Sept. 3, American Airlines flight 618 was traveling from Dallas to Newark Liberty International Airport when crew members encountered a 'disruptive customer' on board, the carrier said in a statement shared with PEOPLE. The plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). The FBI subsequently arrested the individual at the airport, the agency confirmed to PEOPLE. His identity was later revealed as 67-year-old Layne Arthur Lundeen. Richard O'Lenick via Storyful According to court records reviewed by PEOPLE, Lundeen currently faces Maryland state charges of second-degree assault and disorderly conduct. The FBI confirmed it will continue to investigate the incident and determine if federal charges will be filed. Criminal charges aren't the only consequences Lundeen is now facing. According to Tucson, Ariz.'s Long Realty, where Lundeen was listed as vice president, broker and Realtor, the agency has 'ended its affiliation' with him. Alamy 'The individual is no longer associated with or authorized to represent Long Realty in any capacity,' the agency wrote in a Sept. 6 social media post. 'The conduct described in the reports is wholly inconsistent with the professionalism, integrity, compassion, and respect for others that Long Realty expects from those affiliated with the company.' Juan Mejia, a fellow passenger and former law enforcement officer, described Lundeen's alleged misconduct in an interview with ABC News. '[The] gentlemen sitting two rows behind us started becoming belligerent, making derogatory remarks of the staff of American Airlines and other passengers, racial slurs, vulgar language, very offensive to the women' sitting in the row behind him, Mejia said. The passenger says he was monitoring the situation with his friend and seatmate Richard Olenick before Lundeen allegedly became violent. 'Juan immediately knew that action had to be taken. He got up right away and jumped in the seat right next to the passenger and began working on restraining him in order to keep the situation contained,' Olenick told the outlet. 'He bit my hand. He didn't break skin, just left teeth marks on my hand. We were covered in his blood,' Mejia said in an interview with CBS News. 'He was bleeding quite a bit from cuts that he inflicted on himself.' They added that he 'was cleared by paramedics for an open wound on his arm that was noticed by officers while being taken into custody.'
