Man found sleeping inside Houston home with mother's body in duffel bag

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A Harris County man has been charged with tampering with a human corpse after deputies found his mother's body inside a black duffel bag wrapped in bloody sheets and a rug, according to court records. Arman Malik, 34, was hospitalized as of Friday when the felony charge was filed. He was detained after investigators found his mother's body Recommended Videos Family members told investigators they hadn't been able to reach their mother, Dyna Sorto De Malik, since Saturday, Aug. 29, so they requested a welfare check to a home on Valley Knoll Drive on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Arman Malik had recently been living with her, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, and she wasn't answering the phone, texts, or the door. Deputies forced entry into the home around 10 p.m. that day and reported finding Arman Malik sleeping in a bedroom and in the bedroom across the hall, they allegedly smelled an odor that resembled a decomposing body, according to records. Deputies then saw a sheet in the middle of the room that appeared to have blood on it. Under the sheet, deputies found a large duffle bag which smelled like a decomposing corpse, so they unzipped the bag and 'observed human skin and what he believed to be an arm within the duffle bag,' according to records. That ended the security sweep of the home, records show, and investigators got a search warrant for the home. Under the duffle bag, investigators reported seeing blood-soaked carpet and what appeared to be dark coagulated blood, as well as blood spatter on a nearby dresser, according to records. Investigators also found home security cameras that were 'effectively disabled,' according to records, including the front door outward-facing camera with batteries removed and face down. An outdoor camera also allegedly had been turned around to face a wall of the home, instead of away from the residence, and another camera inside the home that was supposed to stand upward and rotate had been tipped on its side, blocked by a glass vase. The victim's iPhone was found in the home and investigators tried to unlock it with a passcode but immediately got a message that said, 'iPhone unavailable, try again in 1 hour,' which led investigators to believe Arman Malik may have tried to access the phone to delete or conceal evidence. Arman Malik was detained but 'unresponsive and required sternum rubs, as though he was under the influence of an unknown substance,' according to records. He was rushed to the hospital, where investigators saw what appeared to be dried blood under his fingernails and he appeared to have scratches and scrapes around his hands. Investigators believe his mother's body was concealed for a long period of time, according to records, but it's unclear exactly when she may have died. Records show her cause and manner of death are still pending. Arman Malik has a previous conviction for robbery causing bodily injury, according to records, and in 2010 received four years of community supervision in that case.
