KP social welfare council seeks Rs200m grant amid restructuring plan

Peshawar - The Provincial Council for Social Welfare, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has proposed increasing its annual grant-in-aid from Rs8 million to at least Rs200 million to meet its expanding responsibilities and strengthen welfare activities across the province. The proposal was discussed at the 34th meeting of the council, held at the office of the Social Welfare Adviser in Peshawar under the chairmanship of Chief Minister's Adviser on Zakat and Ushr, Social Welfare, Special Education and Women Empowerment Malak Liaqat Ali Khan. Secretary Social Welfare Sharif Hussain, Section Officer Home Department Abbas Salam, council member from Hazara Umar Javed, Additional Secretary Revenue Muhammad Saleem, Deputy Secretary Finance Gulshan Ara, Additional Secretary Sahibzada Mukhtar and other officials attended. Participants discussed proposals for restructuring the Provincial Council for Social Welfare to make its administrative structure and scope of work more effective. Participants said a clear legal and administrative framework was essential for enabling the council to perform its functions effectively. While discussing the council's budget for 2026-27, participants considered a substantial increase in its grant-in-aid. The proposal envisages gradually raising the existing allocation of Rs8 million to at least Rs200 million. The meeting also discussed the Finance Department's role in approving or recommending grants-in-aid for voluntary social welfare agencies and NGOs. Participants called for a transparent and systematic mechanism for supporting deserving organisations and ensuring that available resources were used effectively for welfare projects. Participants stressed the need for stronger coordination among relevant institutions, improved information sharing and more effective monitoring of welfare projects. They also agreed to strengthen cooperation between government departments and non-governmental organisations working in the social welfare sector to ensure better use of resources and improve service delivery.
